Circuit Bending- Speak and Read

So I have decided to teach the world how to circuit bend a Speak and (read, spell, math).
Be sure to read all the way through before beginnging

 Things needed:
Speak and (read, spell, or math) in this case, I have used a Speak and Read
Guitar amp and cord (optional)
4 C Batteries

Things you should probably buy from radioshack or the like
1 Pushbutton on/off switch
set of Normally Open momentary push button switches
set of Normall Closed momentary push button switchea
3 Mini Toggle Switches
1 Potentiometer (at least 500K, I used 100) The physical size of mine was almost too big to fit inside the speak, so keep that in mind
1 Mono Plug (to hook the amp into)
body contact bolt (any random screw will do- I stole one from my desk…)
wire (thin)
alligator clip ended wire (for testing)
wire strippers are very helpful
Soddering iron (with a small tip) and sodder

Begin by taking off the back of your Speak and exploring what is in there. Next, you need to figure out what each silver spot does. Use the Alligator clip wire to test and just play around for a while. You might discover one row that controls each of the games- touching that part will start that specific game

You will start to notice that the ‘off’ button won’t work once you make the speak ‘confused, so now would be a good time to put a reset button in. Splice into either one of the wires that connect to the battery (cut one in half, strip both sides). Then, sodder in a normally closed pushbutton. When you push this it will interrupt the signal and reset the game.

Next, mark the places where you can fit/ would like to fit the different controls (toggles, buttons, potentiometer)
Use a power drill with an appropriate size drill bit and drill the holes

Place all controls where the belong and cut the alligator clips in half, soddering each control in the middle of a test wire.

Continue testing, using the controls and figuring out exactly what effects you want. It is helpful to mark these places with a marker- Blue shows up well.

Once you know where you want the wires, begin soddering. Carefully strip the alligator head off of the wires and sodder the wires to the spots on the circuit board. Make sure not to touch any other spots.

Attach the Mono-jack- two wires should connect it directly to the two existing wires that are on the Speak’s little  speaker.

Make sure everything is attached, test, play and see what your new toy can do!
(And don’t forget to clean it, mine was a Salvation Army find and had some nice mold spots on it :) )

PLAY, YOUTUBE, ENJOY
